For many years, wood-frame construction has been providing the world with high-quality, affordable housing. This goes from town houses to multi-storey apartment buildings, and from single-family bungalows to large luxury houses. Wood frame houses are economical to build, heat and cool, and provide maximum comfort to occupants. Wood shells are approximately 1/2 of the cost of a comparable concrete shell. Wood construction is easily adapted to traditional, contemporary and most futuristic building styles. Its architectural possibilities are limitless.

Insect Resistance

Wood framed houses can be built without termite or insect risk even in areas with the highest levels of insect risk

There are 6 simple strategies that offer the greatest protection against termites and other insects in wood frame construction:
  • Suppression - is an attempt to reduce the overall termite population over a wide area. Examples - Locate and destroy nests in street trees.
  • Site Management - means remove any pre-existing nests or termite pathways, and avoid creating new paths. Examples - Remove tree stumps (potential nest sites), don't leave wood debris on site and don't store cardboard or other cellulosic materials in crawlspaces.
  • Soil Barriers - prevent termites form reaching the house. Examples - insecticides applied to the soil, or physical barriers that termites can't cross. Care must be taken not to breach the barrier. A tree with overhanging branches that touch the house can be a bridge.
  • Slab and foundation details - can reduce the chance of termites getting into the house unobserved, which is common as they prefer to stay sheltered and will often enter from underground, in cracks in the foundation, crawlspaces or hollow concrete bricks. Termite shields are in this category but are not that effective.
  • Structural protection - will minimize termite damage to structural framing by using treated wood.
  • Surveillance and remediation - use the services of a professional to regularly check for signs of termites or barrier breaches to eliminate any discovered termites and make and necessary changes. Traditional response to infestation is house fumigation. Baiting systems are a lasting option if the termites carry insecticide back to the nest.
With these steps implemented, wood framed houses can be built without risk even in areas with the highest levels of insect risk.
